The workshop is intended for people interested in documentary filmmaking, but especially for beginners without much experience.

Our society is strongly influenced by companies, because they deceive us with advertisements where it is shown how an environmentally friendly life could and should be. But this is in fact greenwashing, of which our streets are flooded. This means that certain activities are presented as environmentally friendly, although this is not the truth. In our workshop we would like to explore innovative ways with the participants to create new socio-ecological narratives.

Documentary film can be a good vehicle to tell stories from our perspective. Today’s technology, which many of us in Berlin have at our disposal (cell phone and headphones with microphone), allows us to record them with good quality. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of filmmaking. The goal of the workshop is to have participants:make a short documentary film (2 minutes) in which they explore greenwashing.

KlimaDeSol is supported by ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL on behalf of the BMZ and the Landesstelle für Entwicklungszusammenarbeit Berlin.
.

Translations of the native texts in German:

2. sulti_german 4. renzo_german – Documentos de Google Tonny_German Daniellis Hernandez Calderon_Dt_end

In the portfolio, seven BIPoC activists, two collectives and four anti-colonial resistance struggles and fighters are portrayed and presented. In the portraits, we learn in a touching way how people who are otherwise hardly seen, heard or perceived by the white-centered climate movement look at the climate crisis, at policy fields such as development policy, human rights, diversity, migration, but also at our entire society. They give us the opportunity to become familiar with biographies of people of whose courage, humanity, and unwavering commitment to social justice we never learn. KlimaDeSol is a project that started out as a series of empowerment workshops in the spring and summer of 2020 for BIPoC, people from the diaspora and migrant communities, who are involved in the climate justice movement. It is coordinated by Lucía Muriel from the association glokal e.V..

Over the last decades as well as in the present, the German climate movement with mainstream organizations like fff and/or GP etc. has proven to be predominantly white. Debates within the movement are dominated by white perspectives and decision-making, the structures are exclusive and the efforts of BIPoC and perspectives from diaspora and migrant communities are dismissed and disregarded. The consequence is that, once again, only the white part of the story is being told.

KlimaDeSol aims to fundamentally contribute to a democratic, decolonial and solidarity movement regarding climate justice. It directly opposes the white, elitary and western dominated concept of climate with a decolonial, holistic and intersectional narrative. To reach this goal, KlimaDeSol seeks to empower BIPoC and people from the diaspora and migrant communities. We shift the paradigm by focusing on the crucial contribution and resistance of BIPoC worldwide against ecological destruction and colonial structures and racism. We want to anchor this knowledge and framing regarding climate justice and climate protection deeply into our everyday consciousness. This means to us as well that we reclaim the climate justice movement for ourselves. KlimaDeSol is a space for us by us, so with KlimaDeSol we also create a safer space for us. By “decolonial” we understand the consequent critique of power and racial oppression regarding the historical and present colonial way of inhabiting this planet from the perspective of resistant people from the Global South as well as BIPoC, activists from diaspora and migrant activists in the Global North. At the moment we are still engaged in the process of coming together, finding ourselves as a group and defining concrete goals and/or self-understanding etc. What do we do?
The series of empowerment workshops were divided into two parts. In the first part we focused on the resistance and struggles against the destruction of ecosystems and livelihoods in the Global South and Global North. In the second part we had the opportunity to start a process of self-empowerment through collective art work and creativity. The idea was to go into creative and artistic action on the 12th of October as an act of resistance and commemoration of colonial violence, genocide and oppression of colonized people worldwide. This process was accompanied by Yili Rojas and Paola Reyes, who supported the collective essentially with their own experiences, perspectives and skills as artists, activists and PoC.ACTIONS
One action based on the idea to make visible the century old as well as recent resistance especially of Black women*, women* of color against ecological destruction, racism and ongoing colonial structures. It was important to us to shift the narrative in a way that it visualized and told the stories of BIPoC resistance to not reproduce the white narrative of “white saviorism” or to show the faces of white oppressors again. Therefore, we collected pictures & names of important figures and collectives of resistance and projected these onto the walls of buildings in the city of Berlin. [Video+Pictures]Another action used sound as a method to create an intervention. This group will use the anniversary of the so-called Berlin-Congo Conference as an opportunity to point out and draw attention to the colonial continuities and their impact on the environment and social affairs in the equatorial belt through our capitalist-driven consumer society. On November 15th 1884 the colonialistsbegan the civilization-breaking division of the African continent. Their decisions are still effective today. With various consumer goods, the group will raise awareness of the consequences we accept and the existing resistance, which are all too often overlooked. déchainé (fr. for unleash, unchain) deals with the production chains of (neo)colonial goods and gives them an acoustic body. In its first approach individual sounds of the production, distribution, consumption and enjoyment of coffee meet and generate illuminating sound collages. Because of the Covid-19 questions, the action is being digitally processed.
