Already in advance there was a lot of protest from Native American organizations and activists. The <a title=\"AIM California\" href=\"http:\/\/aimsocal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Indian Movement (AIM) in California<\/a> held a <a title=\"Indian Country Today Media Network\" href=\"http:\/\/indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com\/2015\/09\/21\/indigenous-nations-v-junipero-serra-aim-takes-serra-court-161802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tribunal<\/a> for Serra in Los Angeles in which he was convicted of enslavement, torture, and participation in genocide, among other crimes. The <a title=\"Walk of Anchestors\" href=\"http:\/\/walkfortheancestors.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walk of Anchestors<\/a> proclaimed a Day of Mourning on the day of canonization after a 650-mile pilgrimage in memory of the victims of missionization. An initiative around Norma Flores tried to prevent the canonization by <a title=\"moveon: Petition against the canonization of Serra\" href=\"http:\/\/petitions.moveon.org\/sign\/urge-pope-francis-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a>.
